Originally from the dry regions, it has a secondary diversification center in South Asia. Domestication took place in Central Africa, where watermelon has been grown for over 5000 years. In Egypt and the Middle East, it has been grown for over 4000 years. In China, its culture was introduced around the 10th century, in Europe, around the 13th century and in America, in the 16th century. Bantu and Sudanese black people brought it to Brazil at the slavery time.
